What is the Western Suburbs Alliance?
The Western Suburbs Alliance Inc (WSA) was formed by members of community groups in Claremont, Cottesloe, Mosman Park, Peppermint Grove, Nedlands and Subiaco in order to champion the interests of western suburbs ratepayers and residents who are finding that their democratic rights and quality of their natural and built environment and lifestyle are being eroded by the Barnett Government.
Premier Barnett commissioned the Metropolitan Local Government Review (Robson Report). This Report provided no evidence of savings and deliberately suppressed its own findings that the councils were financially viable.
Premier Barnett has always made it clear that he wants amalgamation. If necessary, he will enforce this by Act of Parliament. He is deliberately delaying any decision on this issue until after the March 9 election.
The Barnett government introduced the 2010 Approvals and Related Reforms (No. 4) Planning Act and 2011 Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority Act. These are the most draconian planning laws ever known in this State. They over-ride the councils’ planning powers, allow no public say on development or re-zoning and favour the developers.
WSA opposes enforced amalgamation and any merger without evidence of the cost benefits and the opportunity for a vote on this issue.
WSA is not against change, development and voluntary local government re-structuring. WSA is not a political party. These issues are above party politics.
WSA represents citizens who want to be properly consulted and have reasonable control over their communities and environment. This is a fundamental and inalienable right of all Australian citizens.
